I would have never considered blogging as a career option because I never really understood what blogging is.

Until a few years ago I thought blogging just meant an online diary for teenagers or stay at home moms that use blogging as a hobby.

A blog is actually a regularly updated website or page with new content.

For example, The New York Times, The Economist, The Guardian, Huffington Post, and even Conde Nast Traveller, are all blogs.

Why you should consider blogging as a career

You develop new skills

Owning and managing a blog is a lot of hard work. It requires learning how to customize a website, copywriting, social media, PR, graphic design, SEO and many other things.

While it might sound scary, literally anybody that knows how to use a computer and has Internet access can start blogging as a career.

There are thousands of articles, tutorials, and courses on how to start a blog.

You don’t need to be a web developer or a coder to get a blog up and running. There are so many options available without having to learn any of that.

You can learn graphic design while avoiding using Adobe Suite. I wish I knew this a few years ago because I was never really interested in learning Adobe.

There are many user-friendly softwares, such as Canva, that are made for beginner bloggers so that you can learn everything about graphic design in a couple of days.

The good part is that if later down the line you decide that you do not wish to pursue blogging as a career, you will have learned so many new skills that you will have more career choices.

Why you should consider blogging as a career

You become an authority in your niche

I bet you are thinking that you cannot start a career in blogging because you are not a writer. What if I tell you that some of the most successful bloggers out there are not writers either?

The only thing that you need to be is knowledgeable enough in a specific topic that other people will be able to learn from your expertise.

Blogging eventually means providing value to other people and solving their problems with your expertise.

This can be anything from raising kids, home décor, digital marketing, accounting, recruiting, how to run a business, how to lose weight, sports, cars, travel, food recipes, fashion, literally anything that you can think of.

If you have a full-time job and decide to start blogging as a side hustle, this can be a great way to showcase your expertise if blogging is related to your day job.

Your blog can be used as a portfolio and also it can help you connect with other people in your industry.

Blogging opens so many doors and even if blogging is not your career choice, it can lead to discovering a new career path.

You make money

Depending on how much time you decide to invest in blogging, you can earn not only a side income, but make a great living out of it.

Bloggers from around the world are making anything from 3,000$ per month and up to more than 100,000$ month. Yes, you read that right. You can make 100,000$ per month from blogging. I personally, quit my full-time job after a year of blogging and now I make a full-time income from this blog that you are reading right now.

The beautiful thing about blogging is that you take out what you put in. If you are serious about it, you can grow your blog into a thriving business. Here are some of my favorite bloggers that are absolutely crushing it:

Michelle of Making Sense of Cents

Michelle started her blogging career while in college, as a method of keeping track of her personal finances. Her aim was to pay off her student loan.

She started blogging 7 years ago and for the past few years, she is constantly making more than $100K per month.  This has allowed her and her husband to quit their jobs and travel full time.

You can check her latest income report here.

Lauren and Alex of Avocadu

Lauren and Alex are a couple who decided to give blogging a try, as they were not happy in their professional lives.

Lauren is a Certified Public Accountant and Alex is a professional Personal Trainer.

Their first blog failed because they didn’t have a clear strategy but afterward they decided to start a new blog about health and fitness, taking advantage of Alex’s background.

This blog is called Avocadu and it soon brought them enough money that both of them were able to quit their full-time jobs and turn them into professional bloggers.

Blogging eventually paid off and they are now on a roll teaching other people how to start money-making blogs, through their second blog called Create & Go.

Here you can find their latest income report, where they made $111K in August 2019.

Elna from Twins Mommy

Elna is one of my favorite bloggers out there because her articles are packed with value for anyone looking to start a blog and make money out of it.

She started blogging while being a stay at home mommy to her beautiful twins and soon discovered the huge potential blogging has to bring in money.

She dedicated all of her free time to learning and growing her blog and she is now teaching other mommies how to start a money-making blog.

blogging as a career

You become your own boss

One of the things that all bloggers, both successful and the ones that failed, agree on one thing: it’s impossible NOT to make a career blogging if you are serious about it.

Blogging indeed requires time and dedication, however, if you are serious about it, you can see the results after 6 months.

While it might seem like a long time, how long does it take to get a promotion or a pay rise in the corporate world?

You can start making more than 6,000$ after 12 to 18 months of blogging. How long would it take to make that much money as an employee?

For any standards, making 6,000$  per month will allow you to be your own boss and to focus full time on growing your own blogging business.

Unlike other types of businesses, blogging requires a minimum investment, as little as $3.95/month with Bluehost. Bluehost is a hosting provider, which you will need if you want to monetize your website.

Get your hosting now for as little as $3.95/month. So, for a $48 investment, you get your hosting for 12 month, a free domain name and a complete website setup with just one click. As I mentioned above, you don’t need to know anything about setting up websites.

OK, but how exactly do you make money blogging?

There are so many ways to make money blogging. Some of the most common ways to monetize a blog are:

  • ads
  • affiliate marketing
  • sponsored posts
  • creating and selling your own digital products such as e-courses, e-books, organizers, printables
  • selling services
  • writing reviews

It really depends on the blogging niche that you choose. Some bloggers make money mostly through ads, others, such as Michelle through affiliate marketing, and others through all the above.

She makes more than 60,000$ per month through affiliate marketing.

Others prefer creating and selling their own digital products, such as Ana of The She Approach.

She has created several courses, one of which is about how to use Pinterest for blogging and which has proven a great way for her to increase her blogging income.

I loved all these reasons! It’s true that it might take a while to get your blog off the ground (like with most businesses), but if you’re consistent and putting in the work it’s one of the best careers ever. It’s fun and like you said, you get to be your own boss doing something you love! Thanks for the great post!

    • Corina

Thanks Maud! Blogging is so rewarding. I just wish more people would know about this option. My only regret is that I haven’t discovered it earlier. Thanks for the comment 🙂

Lovely article. Until last year I thought much the same as you about blogging. Since then I have learnt so much and continue to learn so much every day. I really enjoyed blogging and I think it’s a great way to learn new skills. Lovely article thank you.

I love this post! It makes me feel so proud of the choice I made, to start blogging about I like, it encourages me a lot to keep going and pushing hard.
      Thank you so much!

  • Lesa

I love all these reasons. For me, blogging and social media as a career is something I can do, despite my disabilities. My chronic health problems prevent me from having a regular 9-5 job, and this helps me work around it!

Blogging can be indeed a profitable career if you treat it as a real job. However the majority of new bloggers gets excited about reading huge income reports from successful bloggers, but they fail to put the hard work, effort & patience that bloggign requires!

    • Corina

I couldn’t agree more! If you put in the hard work and take it seriously, it’s almost impossible not to make it, like everything else in life eventually. Regarding income reports, the problem is that most of them do not mention how many years of hard work it takes to make such income and new bloggers believe that it’s easy peasy, only to get discouraged 6 months in without an income.

  • Claire

What a brilliant post. I can never see myself making money from blogging, mainly because I don’t have a specific niche and currently have barely any time to do the basics.

But you’ve sold it so well here, maybe it is time to invest in me x

    • Corina

Hey Claire! Thank you, that’s so nice of you 🙂 I believe anyone can make money blogging with a bit of perseverance. I’m sure that there is something that you are good at that other people can learn from. Sure, it can take time, but everything that’s worth it does. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  • Amanda

I absolutely LOVE blogging! My blog has only been live for a couple of months, and it seems awful slow going! But I’m committed to making this work as a steady source of income for my family! 💗

    • Corina

Like most businesses, blogging is slow in the beginning. That’s absolutely fine. Once it starts picking up it will only go higher from there. Stay committed and you will get there! 🙂

I’m a recently launched blogger, therefore I found your blog title interesting. I still feel that it is not easy to learn about SEO and how to actually begin with the right marketing with my niche. I’ve concentrated on setting up my blog and writing content. In between life’s demands I keep at it and enjoy it. My mind is filled with creative ideas that I hope to bring to fruition. Thanks for all the information you shared.

    • Corina

Congrats on getting started, Joyce! I’m sure you will get there. Learning SEO can feel overwhelming at first but I promise if you put 30 minutes every day you will soon master it. It’s amazing that you have plenty of creative ideas. Keep learning and writing content and you will soon start seeing results.

    • Corina

Congrats on getting started! Good luck and whenever you are feeling down, which you will, come back and read this article again :). Don’t give up, no matter what.

    • Corina

I think that as long as you are good at something (cooking, being a mom, marketing, traveling, etc.), literally anything and you are able to teach others how to do it, you can make a career out of blogging.

  • Rasya

I’d love to make blogging as a career but it’s not feasible for now as I’m making zero in blogging 😂 Would need to look for the affiliate programs and how to collaborate with brands.

    • Corina

That’s okay. You can’t start making money from the beginning. Do it as a side job for now and you will start seeing results if you put the effort a few days per week. Good luck! 🙂
